Charge-M8 and Electric Miles: Libra dynamic load balancing integrated with emPACT CPMS
Live building demand from Charge-M8 Libra now feeds Electric Miles' emPACT charge point management system and its SmartFlex grid trading platform.
On 2 October 2026, Charge-M8 and Electric Miles announced the integration of our Libra dynamic load balancing device with Electric Miles' emPACT charge point management system (CPMS). The integration is available now to emPACT customers. It lets commercial sites with multiple chargers manage charging against their real-time site capacity, and gives eligible sites a way to earn recurring revenue by making that charging flexibility available to the grid.
About Electric Miles
Electric Miles is a UK EV charging and grid management software company, based in London with a second office in San Francisco. Its platform is made up of emPACT, a CPMS for charge point operators, the Electric Miles app for driver smart charging, Installer Miles for charger commissioning, and SmartFlex for grid flexibility and V2G trading.
emPACT is hardware-agnostic and built on the open OCPP standard, so operators can monitor and control chargers from different manufacturers in one place. SmartFlex is integrated with all six UK DSOs and NESO, takes part in wholesale markets and, according to the announcement, has delivered more than 40,000 grid flexibility events.
Why live site data matters for commercial EV charging
The electrical capacity available on a commercial site changes through the day as building demand rises and falls. Without a live view of that demand, operators usually cap charging at a cautious fixed level and leave capacity unused, or they risk going over the agreed supply limit and paying additional charges.
The other option is a grid connection upgrade. That can mean significant cost, long lead times and infrastructure work before any extra chargers go in.
How Libra, emPACT and SmartFlex work together
Libra measures what the building is using. emPACT uses that data to share power between chargers on site, and SmartFlex uses the same data when trading flexibility with the grid.
The integration includes:
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Charge-M8 Libra | Dynamic load balancing device that monitors building demand in real time and sends it to emPACT over OCPP 1.6, with Wi-Fi, Ethernet and 4G connectivity and triple fail-over |
| Electric Miles emPACT | Hardware-agnostic CPMS that calculates the power available for EV charging and adjusts the output of connected chargers so the site stays within its agreed supply limit |
| Electric Miles SmartFlex | Grid flexibility platform that adjusts charging demand when the grid needs it, using Libra's live headroom data so flexibility events do not compromise the site's own supply |
The power each vehicle receives depends on the capacity available on site at the time and how long the vehicle stays connected.
Available now to emPACT customers. Operators already using emPACT can add Libra's live site data to their charging sites.
What operators can do with Libra and emPACT
These are the features most relevant to commercial and fleet charging sites.
Live building demand
Libra reports actual building consumption, so charging limits follow real use rather than a fixed estimate.
Direct OCPP 1.6
Libra connects directly to the CPMS over OCPP 1.6, which keeps integration with the charging software simple.
Triple fail-over
Wi-Fi, Ethernet and 4G connectivity with triple fail-over suits a range of commercial installation environments.
Sub-zones
Chargers can be grouped into sub-zones such as individual feeders, car parks or fleet areas.
Charging priorities
Operators set charging priorities and emPACT manages load across the site automatically.
Grid trading
Eligible sites can trade their charging flexibility through SmartFlex on a revenue-share model with no upfront cost.
Benefits of Charge-M8 Libra and Electric Miles emPACT on site
Use the capacity you already have
- Charging output responds to the site's actual conditions instead of a fixed assumption about available capacity
- emPACT keeps connected chargers within the site's agreed supply limit
- Adding chargers does not automatically mean a costly grid connection upgrade
Earn from charging flexibility
- SmartFlex adjusts charging demand when the grid needs flexibility, and participating sites are paid for their contribution
- Libra's live view of site headroom helps make sure flexibility events can be delivered without affecting the site's own supply
- For eligible sites, chargers can become a source of recurring revenue through a revenue-share model with no upfront cost
Open, hardware-agnostic setup
- emPACT manages chargers from multiple manufacturers through the open OCPP standard
- Libra connects directly over OCPP 1.6
- emPACT and Electric Miles' Grid Management platform cover everything from load management on a single site to national flexibility markets
Arrange a site assessment for Libra and emPACT
Operators and installers can request a site assessment, including an estimate of the site's potential for grid trading.
